Throughput at the busiest port in Indonesia, Tanjung Priok Jakarta, was recorded at 2.99 million TEUs in the first half of this year, down 7.7% compared to 3.24 million TEUs in the same period of 2019.
Eventhough throughput is declining due to Covid-19 pandemic, it was not as sharp as in January-May 2020 period which dropped to 10.4% year on year.
Decline in throughput by the end of 2020 is estimated at least in the range of 10%. This estimate takes into account trends in the previous months, Arif Suhartono, President Director of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II (Persero) / IPC said, Friday (7/17).
He explained, activity at the port was very much influenced by economic activity in general. Indonesia government has made several scenarios related to the pandemic and its impact on economy, one of which is the outbreak will subside in the first quarter of 2021.
"However, we must be grateful because the activities at the port are still going well," he said. (hlz/hlz)
